I went to an 8-week
girls summer camp up in Northern Wisconsin from age 8 to 14. Every day after
lunch, except Sunday of course, all of us girls ran as fast as we could to
the camp’s “post office” to receive the daily mail. The days I got nothing I
could feel the tears well up in my eyes as I only saw my parents one day over
those 8 weeks. But when I did get a letter I’d run back to the cabin for rest
time and read it over and over, cherishing every word until the next bell rang.
Now I love
receiving a beautiful invitation or birthday card in the mail, but long gone
are the days of opening a letter from a family member or friend that tells a
story, asks questions and requests a response. I miss the thrill of opening the
envelope, admiring the stationary and gliding across the page of written words.
So I recently
wrote one to an old friend. It felt good to think about what I wanted to say,
rather than typing away and impatiently hitting the send button. I’m hoping to
write more letters, and look forward to the days when I’m excited to go to the
mailbox again.
What about you?
Do you ever write letters anymore?
