Bringing the Library Home


I always imagined going to the library with my kids would be so magical. I pictured us selecting our books and then going off to a corner where we’d sit together and I’d read aloud to them while they listened intently. But the reality is, there’s a computer my 3-year-old wants to play (even though she doesn’t know how), there’s a movie area right when you walk in that distracts the older one from the books, and my kids’ favorite section has the books based on TV shows like Caillou and My Little Pony. My older daughter even burst out crying last week when she got her first library card because she had trouble fitting her name in the signature box. Oy.

We’ll keep trying. Some day it will be magical, darn it. In the meantime, I often dream of having the feel of the library right at home. The best place to turn for nostalgic, but modern, library touches is Land of Nod. Here are some favorites:
